Not being allowed to see one another the morning before the ceremony wasn’t the only wedding tradition Amanda Howarth and Kurt Pytel turned on its head.
The couple, aged 28 and 29 respectively, married at a colourful garden wedding at Shadow Fax Winery on March 17, 2017. The date is significant for the Melbourne pair whose favourite number is seven. “We got married on our seven-year anniversary after seven years together,” explains Amanda.
First-look photos were on the agenda so the bride and groom could spend more time with loved ones after the ceremony. Other traditions were also done away with to create a wedding uniquely them. “Our photos were taken around Werribee Mansion, Shadowfax Winery and a few sunset shots at Werribee Park Golf Club,” explains the bride. “We broke from tradition and didn’t have a first dance, cutting of the cake or father-daughter dance.”
The minimalist approach to their big day with 50 guests is something the newlyweds are extremely proud to have achieved. “Our story is unique; our wedding day wasn’t completely traditional and everyone had a ball. Everything at the reception was DIY and we gave to a charity close to our hearts as our bomboniere as well,” smiles Amanda.

Amanda chose a colourful bouquet from a local supplier to brighten her wedding day.

The couple met before the ceremony for first-look location photos with photographer Selena McLaren to maximise time with guests.

“Don’t just add something to the wedding because it’s expected, do it because you want to.”

Guests were invited to the couple’s big day with custom invitations from Personally Invited.

As well as lawn games, guests were entertained with a photo booth from All The Hype, and a DJ from Melbourne Entertainment Co.

“It was the best night of our lives.”
