Sylvia & Matt’s heavenly destination wedding in tropical Fiji

Do you believe in soul mates? It’s stories like this one that definitely makes me think that in a whole world full of people, there possibly is just one perfect partner for each of us.

It was December 2007. Sydney girl, Sylvia Wong, had been living in London for five months when she took a trip to Canada to further her travels abroad. Canadian native, Matt Service, was taking a trip himself – between states – and through a series of events which veered them both from their initial paths, they found themselves waiting at a bus stop in the small town of Golden.

Sylvia says, “If it weren’t for my flight being delayed two hours, subsequently missing my direct bus and having to wait overnight for the second bus, and if it weren’t for Matt being kicked off his bus (for, ahem, drinking), then we both would never have met.”

She adds, “I gave Matt my email address when we parted ways and a couple of weeks later he found me on Facebook. We chatted now and then for the next six months while I was travelling around Europe. Then we started chatting on MSN and after that it was daily phone calls for about 4-6 hours every day!”

She adds, “I flew back to Canada to see him in August the following year and we decided to start a relationship. We also had to make the decision about where we would live. Either he moved to London or Sydney, or I move to Canada. Around that time, the GFC hit and I was missing home, so Sydney it was.”

Four-and-a-half years later, Matt is almost used to his new home – well, except for the Aussie heat – and after a quiet, private proposal, the pair held a goooorgeous destination wedding on the heavenly tropical island, Fiji.

“I wanted a chapel wedding and Matt wanted a beach wedding,” says Sylvia. “So it was the perfect compromise.”
