Throwing away tradition was the best thing Rebecca Candy and Justin Lawler did for their modern art deco wedding.
The Sydney couple married on October 20, 2016 with 67 guests at Gunners’ Barracks. The art deco venue set the tone for their casual affair – which was entirely planned by the bride, 23, with the support of her groom, 27.
“We had a low-key family affair,” says Rebecca. “We skipped tradition, having the most magical moments with a ‘first look‘ and spending time together before the ceremony. We decided to avoid the stress and have no bridal party.”
The practice manager designed her own wedding dress, which she had a family member create with personal touches. She teamed it with accessories handed down by loved ones.
The pair opted for a mid-week wedding, to keep costs down. “It was a beautiful Thursday wedding in Sydney, done on a budget and planned entirely by me,” smiles Rebecca.

The couple decided to do a “first-look” for photos, making their day simpler and extending time with guests.

Rebecca’s lace and satin gown was designed by her and created by Justin’s aunt.

Weddings by Morris managed to capture a few gorgeous sunset shots before the reception began.

“Our day was fantastic,” smiles the bride.
